Reducing Oxidative Stress for Hair Health and Growth

When hair isn’t growing well or starts thinning, it’s disconcerting and bound to affect a person’s self-image, as well as overall happiness.  A full head of hair is often seen as a sign of health and vigor.  Actually, there are many factors that can negatively affect hair health and growth, including toxic chemicals, chemotherapy, malnutrition, aging and oxidative stress1-4. In fact, certain chemotherapy agents cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress that typically increases with aging, occurs when cells such as hair follicle cells are unable to eliminate free radicals known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) using natural antioxidant defense enzymes5.

Proprietary Blend found in HairHealth includes potent antioxidants including hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein from olives, as well as N-acetylcysteine (NAC), taurine, and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM).  Hydroxytyrosol has been shown to activate the critical antioxidant defense enzyme, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein have been found to activate another important antioxidant defense enzyme, heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1)5-7Proprietary Blend also includes B3 and B6 vitamins as well as the amino acids, Glycine and L-Proline to provide strengthening nutrition to cells.

ROS can damage cell membranes, lipids, proteins, DNA and organelles including mitochondria8. Mitochondria, known as the powerhouse of cells can also contribute substantially to oxidative stress when damaged or dysfunctional5. Antioxidant defense mechanisms that protect against damage decrease with aging, and they can also decrease with certain health conditions including hypertension and diabetes9,10.  MnSOD has been shown to protect mitochondria and it is also activated by N-acetylcysteine11,12.

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is the “master regulator” of genes controlling reduction and oxidation (redox) homeostasis (maintenance of stability) in cells and it is a key regulator of oxidative defense enzymes like MnSOD and HO-113,14. An important study reported that Nrf2 could protect against oxidative stress-induced hair growth inhibition15.  Not too surprisingly, the olive polyphenols, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein have been shown to activate Nrf2, regulating signaling pathways involving antioxidant/detoxifying enzymes16,17.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent used to treat a variety of cancers that has been found to cause hair follicle cell death through the generation of ROS. An olive leaf extract rich in oleuropein was found to be protective against cisplatin-induced cell damage that was partly mediated by inducing the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway18, and oral administration of oleuropein has been shown to attenuate cisplatin-induced acute renal injury19.  Topical application of oleuropein has also been found to induce hair growth in a model that included skin at resting phase20. Moreover, another important component of Proprietary Blend, MSM, has been shown to increase hair growth during treatment of alopecia (hair loss) with magnesium ascorbyl phosphate21.

HairHealth includes beneficial ingredients that protect against oxidative stress and cell damage to help promote hair growth and reduce hair loss.  Proprietary Blend http://www.olivamine.com has been found to improve hair health and growth and promote new hair growth. HairHealth includes impeccably sourced ingredients that have undergone rigorous scientific review to prove that they renew, restore and repair cells.
