Hydroxytyrosol is a naturally occurring phenolic compound associated with olives and olive-derived ingredients. It has attracted scientific interest because of its antioxidant chemistry, but the most useful way to understand it is through the actual human evidence—not through potency rankings or claims that it automatically outperforms common vitamins.
What is hydroxytyrosol?
Hydroxytyrosol is one of several phenolic compounds found in olives and olive products. It is often discussed alongside oleuropein, another olive-associated compound. The amount present in a food, extract, or supplement depends on the source material and processing method.
Why researchers study it
Oxidative reactions are normal parts of human biology. Researchers study dietary antioxidants and polyphenols to understand how they interact with these processes and with measurable biomarkers. Hydroxytyrosol has been examined in laboratory, animal, and human studies, but those types of evidence are not interchangeable.
A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial studied 15 mg of hydroxytyrosol daily for 16 weeks in adults with overweight or prediabetes and evaluated metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers. That type of study adds useful human evidence, but a single trial in a defined population does not establish that hydroxytyrosol prevents disease, works the same in every person, or proves the performance of a different finished supplement.
Is hydroxytyrosol “stronger” than vitamin C or vitamin E?
Simple claims such as “20 times stronger than vitamin C” are not a reliable way to choose a supplement. Different compounds behave differently in laboratory assays and in the human body. Test-tube antioxidant measurements do not directly predict a clinical benefit, and comparing one number across unrelated compounds can be misleading.
Vitamin C and vitamin E are essential nutrients with established biological roles and intake recommendations. Hydroxytyrosol is a bioactive plant compound rather than a replacement for either vitamin.
How to evaluate an olive-derived supplement
Start with the label. Check the exact ingredient form, amount per serving, serving size, other active ingredients, and cautions. Then ask whether claims about the ingredient are supported by human research at a comparable dose and in a relevant population.

Bottom line
Hydroxytyrosol is a scientifically interesting olive polyphenol with a growing research literature. The evidence is more nuanced than “best antioxidant” marketing language suggests. Ingredient quality, dose, formulation, and the strength of human evidence all matter.
